Plain terms for a small app run by one person.

Alefya is a study aid for spoken Palestinian Arabic and Modern Hebrew. Most of it is free, and some of it is sold as a subscription — the section below says exactly which is which. Using the app means agreeing to what is on this page.
Word data is looked up rather than generated: every root, meaning and vowel comes from a published lexicon, and each word card names where its entry came from.
The sentences around that data are written for this app with the help of a language model, and have not been reviewed by a native speaker. That covers the graded stories, the dialogues, the podcast scripts, the daily news, the teaching prose and the retellings in the readers. Every voice in the app is synthesized, not recorded — the podcast hosts are not people. Answers from Ask a Tutor are generated and can be wrong.
This statement is made once, here and on the About page, rather than repeated on every screen. Material lifted verbatim from a published edition — scripture, liturgy — is still credited where it appears, because its licence requires it; treat an attribution line as a credit, not as a quality claim about anything near it.
Levels and projections in the app are estimates from your own hour budget. CEFR bands shown anywhere in it are a signpost, not a certificate, and nobody here is examining you.
Use it for practice. Do not rely on it for anything consequential — legal, medical, official or safety-critical — do not treat it as a certified translation service, and when something matters, ask a person.
Keep your password to yourself. Tell us at support@alefya.me if you think someone else has it. You can delete your account at any time; see the privacy page.
One rule covers the whole app: the first five items of every section are free — the first five lessons, the first five grammar lessons, verbs, short stories, listening episodes, reactions and Dinner Table dialogues, and the first five chapters of each book. That is the same five in both Arabic and Hebrew, so a free account is two languages, not one.
These sections are never gated and need no subscription: your account and progress sync, the daily news, Letters & Sounds, the Bible reader, vocabulary and flashcards, your study plan, videos, and Translate.
A subscription opens everything else in both languages, and raises Ask a Tutor from 10 questions in total to 100 a month. You can also use Ask a Tutor without limit, subscribed or not, by adding your own Anthropic key in Settings — see below.
A subscription costs $99 a year or $12 a month in US dollars. Checkout may show the price in your local currency, and any sales tax, VAT or GST is calculated and shown there before you pay.
Who you are buying from. Payments are sold and processed by Stripe through
Link, which acts as the merchant of record — Stripe, not Alefya, is the seller for tax purposes,
handles the payment and holds the payment details. Alefya never sees or stores your card. Your
bank statement will read LINK.COM rather than Alefya, which is normal and is not a
mistaken charge.
It renews automatically. A subscription continues and is charged again each year or each month until you cancel it. There is no minimum term.
Cancelling. You can cancel at any time, from the subscription card on your Account page in the app or directly at link.com with the email you paid with. Cancelling stops the next charge; it does not cut your access short. You keep everything you paid for until the end of the period you have already paid for, and the app tells you that date. After it passes, the account drops back to the free tier — nothing is deleted, and your progress, flashcards, plan and reading history are all still there.
If a payment fails, Stripe retries it for a few days. Access continues during that window, and the app says so rather than locking you out. If the retries do not succeed, the subscription ends and the account returns to the free tier.
If prices change, the change applies from your next renewal, never retroactively, and you will be told by email before it is charged. Cancelling before that renewal means you are never charged the new price.
Complimentary access. Some accounts are given a subscription without paying — early users, friends of the project, and anyone holding a code. It works exactly like a paid subscription, costs nothing, and is never converted into a paid one without you choosing to.
If the app is not what you wanted, email support@alefya.me within 14 days of a charge and it will be refunded in full, no reason needed. That applies to a renewal you did not intend as much as to a first purchase — if a yearly subscription renewed and you meant to cancel, say so and you get the money back.
Because Stripe is the merchant of record, Stripe's own support can also handle payment questions and may issue a refund directly. Either route works.
If you add an Anthropic or Crossway key, you are using your own account with that company, under their terms, at your own cost. Alefya passes your request to them and shows you the answer; it does not stand between you and them, and it never sees your bill.
Do not attempt to break the app, scrape it wholesale, resell it, or use it to harass anyone through the Friends feature. Access can be withdrawn for any of those.

Some data is third-party and carries its own licence — the Maknuune Palestinian Arabic lexicon and the Hebrew lexicon derived from Wiktionary are both CC BY-SA 4.0, and reach you under that licence regardless of anything above. The app is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied. It may be wrong, unavailable, or discontinued. To the fullest extent the law allows, liability for any damages arising from its use is disclaimed.
These terms may change; the date at the top will say when. Continuing to use the app after a change means accepting it.
